Why you should get your roof repaired or replaced this Autumn...

Winter is the most volatile time for weather and so it's important that your roof is repaired or replaced and in good working condition going into the winter season. It's essential to get your roof inspected and repaired by your local roofer during the Autumn months, in preparation.

This is particularly true if you're worried that your roof won't withstand poor weather conditions i.e. you know there may be some issues with your shingles, tiles, guttering or your flat roof. If this is you, contact a roofing specialist to get your house water tight and fit for purpose as we move into the colder and wetter months of the year. Being prepared will save you a myriad of issues and costs later on. Also bear in mind that roofers get very booked up in the winter...

Typical roof problems include damaged shingles or tiles that will let in water, an old flat roof that won't withstand the poor weather conditions. These are easy enough to fix with the right expertise.

Here are some other problems that may occur during winter and may need the help of a roofing contractor .

  1. Condensation

Condensation occurs when warm air meets a cold surface. If your loft hasn't been properly insulated, this can lead to condensation which can cause mildew and mould in your home, damaging the internal structure. How do you prevent this? Contact your local roofer and ask them to come and check the insulation and also the ventilation in your loft.

2. Flashing leaks

If you have a sloped roof, then you may well have experienced leaky flashings. What's a flashing? They are the strips of metal placed along the front edge, corners and ridges of your roof and around your chimney and skylights. If damaged or not installed properly, they will start to pull away and cause leaks. We recommend checking these at least every six months or asking your local roofer to take a look for you.

3. Ice on the roof

If your roof isn’t ready for winter ice , you could do major damage to the structure of your home. Gutters that aren’t clear can trap moisture. Once the temperature drops, ice-filled gutters can drag on your roof. They can pull away from your home, crack shingles or even damage the underlay. When there is more rain or snow, moisture sneaks into gaps caused by the stress. This is how the dreaded mould infiltrates your home, which none of us wants. Once inside, it is one of the most expensive problems to remedy.

To prevent ice from becoming a problem this winter, we recommend you have your gutters and roof inspected by your local roofer. Have your gutters cleaned, if necessary, and consider leaf guards to prevent the buildup of leaves and other refuse that may blow onto your home.

4. Strong winds

Wind is one of the leading causes of leaks during the winter. As shingles are pulled up, precipitation infiltrates vulnerable areas. In most cases, some water will get through. If you have gaps in your building, you might not find out until you see damage show up as spots on your walls or ceiling.

In addition, loose elements on your roof spell disaster for your energy efficiency. They ensure hot air escapes straight out of your roof while the rest of your home stays cold.

Regular inspections, especially ahead of the winter period, will help you to spot any loose shingles before the wind creates a bigger problem. Replace or repair any elements which pose a risk for leaks. These affordable repairs are worth their weight in gold when winter winds are howling.
